So...I decided to do a little research into this musical to decide my personal feelings on the whole thing, because I've heard lots of different views. I first started by reading the church's stance on it,
"The production may attempt to entertain audiences for an evening, but the Book of Mormon as a volume of scripture will change people's lives forever by bringing them closer to Christ."
So that was somewhat vague, so I decided to watch a couple of interviews, first with the creators, who are also the creators of South Park. They mentioned that they are both very fond of Mormons and did their research on our beliefs and were not intending to take a direct hit at Latter Day Saints, but were simply using them as a platform to represent all religions.
Their statements were actually semi-convincing, and I began to think to myself that maybe the musical wasn't such a big deal, so I decided to Youtube it, and stumbled across one of the songs "I believe." Listening to this song, and reading the comments that went along with the video, solidified for me that I am NOT a supporter of this musical; I have no problem with people making fun of "Mormon's" as a group of people, our culture, whatever, BUT when people start poking fun at our doctrine, things that we know to be true from God, and making it into jokes, then I have a problem, and just from this one song I can tell that that is what this musical does. As a church we believe in being reverent in regards to certian topics, and speaking about things in regards to our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ with respect, and this song and musical portray very little respect or reverence.
Obviously mine is just one of many opinions, but I personally feel that it's setting up those who are observing, to establish missconceptions and is even making way for false doctrine.
