okay, so i'm feeling quite opinionated today (yes more than usual, if that's even possible) I just have had several topics on my mind that I feel the need to vent about, and I am sorry if in my expressing of my views, I offend anyone, that is never, and will never be my goal.:)
1) "the mormon mold"- My mom mentioned something about this to me on the phone today and it really struck a cord with me. She made the statement "I just don't fit in with the mormon mold" (she wasn't saying this in self pity by any means, she was simply just expressing how she felt.) Anyways, WHAT THE HELL EVEN IS THE MORMON MOLD?! i'm surely not it, haha, the mormon mold is a list of cultural behaviors that LDS people feel make them more "righteous." So many members of the church get doctrine confused with culture, hello people, having a skirt on that hits your knees is NOT doctrine. Doctrine not followed can prohibit you from entering the celestial kingdom, culture not followed is not a determining factor...SURPRISE. Just because a person doesn't fit the "mormon mold" meaning they come from this family that has family home evening every monday, never works on sundays, never says an off colored comment, wears shade t-shirts under everything, and has never seen an R-rated movie, or whatever else the "acceptable behaviors of honorable members of the church" are, doesn't mean they don't have a strong testimony of their Savior, and of the Restored Gospel. In my opinion, people who judge others based on their behavior not being up-to-par with how many members feel it should be, will be judged just as much as the person who chooses to perform the "out of line" behavior.
2) Parenting- okay seriously, when you choose to bear children, you are accepting a lot more responsibility than just giving birth. I am a firm believer that the main form of education that a child should receive, should occur in the home. With the education system that we have today, we CAN NOT expect our kids to learn everything they need to know to be respectable people, through the public, or even private, education system. It breaks my heart to know that many kids first exposure to topics as delicate as sex, or drugs, are at school, and even worse, from other kids! As parents (or future parent in my case) it is our responsibility to educate our kids on what's in the world, and how it relates to them, and to the gospel. I also think it is our responsibility to introduce them to culture, diversity, and ways of life that may be different than ours, but are still out there. I think we are to teach them to be tolerant and loving, while still teaching them the values that we believe in and hold. I just can't tell you how many people I meet here at BYUI who even into their 20's are so ignorant when it comes to the world around them. Most of this ignorance comes from their upbringing, they have not learned to accept different ways of life and thinking, and this then results in judgment and improper treatment of issues that we should be working to solve. I am firm believer that if more time were spent teaching children in the home, we would see SUCH an improvement in not only our society, but in the world. Just having simple talks the teach correct principles could decrease immorality, violence, incorrect judgments, prejudice, discrimination, apathy, entitlement, depression, the list could go on and on, just in the ones I listed I could see where it would have stemmed from improper or lack of parenting skills.
So then I ask, why is more emphasis not put on parenthood. Why do people feel it is more necessary for them to take a class on "women's rights" than it is to take a class on child development, or marriage prep. Why are these forms of study looked down upon, when they ultimately have the largest impact of all the careers to choose from? How come you have to be 25 to rent a car, but there is absolutely NO limit on how old you have to be to raise a child. And for that matter, even those that seem old enough to have children, often obtain few of the character traits necessary to mold kids into respectable human beings.
okay, i have more things on my mind, i think that will suffice for now.
